JOHN MACKFALL

“I am 62 years old and have been a musician for the best part of 47 years. My appreciation of music began as a small boy where I listened to monstrous masterpieces of works by Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Mendelssohn and many other great composers on my grandmother’s huge old pre war radio. Of course at the age of four, you are really quite unable to understand what you are listening to or why for that matter, I just knew that I loved, and somehow felt a part of it. This music, combined with concept albums such as Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, which arrived pretty much at the beginning of my working career (when I had hair), helped to shape my own particular  style of composition which can be heard today.

I am a self taught musician and have played a myriad of instruments, including violin, banjo, bass guitar, guitar and keyboards in a variety of different band’s, working with some great musical talents along the way. I served my apprenticeship in working men’s clubs, and travelled the world on the famous cruise ship Canberra, and have also played many prestigious London venues such as Café Royal, Park Lane and Grosvenor Hotel. I was a gigging musician until the age of 48 but decided to retire and concentrate on composing instead.

{My claim to fame} !!! - I have been very close to success and last year Sony BMG put one of my songs forward for Russell Watsons albums, unfortunately it did not fit in with the theme. Also Neal E Boyd, America’s Got Talent winner, and his management were set to record the same song, but unfortunately his recording contract ran out.

I would like to thank the organisers of this competition for creating a platform whereby unknown composers like myself, are given a rare opportunity to show their work .”
